Service Description
The Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) program is an 8-week, evidence-based intervention designed to help parents and caregivers understand and respond to their children's emotional needs, strengthening the parent-child attachment. It is based on over 60 years of research into attachment theory and is designed for parents of children from 4 months to 6 years old. The program teaches that all behaviour is communication and aims to help parents read their child’s subtle cues to provide a "secure base" for exploration and a "safe haven" for comfort. Core Concepts and Structure The Circle Map: The program uses a visual "map" to teach that children need to explore (going out) and need comfort (coming in). "Always" Be BIGGER, STRONGER, WISER, and KIND: This is the core guiding principle, encouraging caregivers to provide security and take charge when necessary. "Being With": Parents learn to support their children's emotional worlds, including managing difficult behaviours and intense emotions (also known as "shark music" – a metaphor for the scary, internal soundtrack that colours a parent’s perception of a child's needs). Rupture and Repair: The program emphasises that "perfect" parenting is not necessary, but that repairing the relationship after conflict is crucial. Program Delivery: COSP is typically delivered to groups of 8 to 15 parents in 8–10 sessions, usually led by myself a trained facilitator using video vignettes and group discussions. I am able to offer one-to-one training also. Benefits of the Program Increased Parental Sensitivity: Helps parents become more attuned to their child's needs, reducing negative perceptions. Improved Behaviour: By understanding the emotional need behind behaviour, parents can reduce reliance on punishment and foster better cooperation. Increased Secure Attachment: Promotes a secure attachment, which is linked to better emotion regulation, higher self-esteem, and better relationships for the child. Reduced Stress: Helps parents manage their own stress, leading to more confident parenting. Who is it for? Parents and Caregivers: It is suitable for parents, foster carers, and grandparents. Children: Primarily for parents of children aged 4 months to 6 years.
